Due to Dehydration If Ignored

A person is medically dehydrated if he / she loses large amounts of fluid so the body loses the ability to function normally. Dehydration can occur acutely or temporarily and can also be chronic or long term. Acute dehydration is usually associated with certain events such as hard exercise that causes sweating, diarrhea, vomiting and so on. While chronic dehydration is usually associated with lifestyle such as rarely drinking, lack of clean water and so forth. 75% of Indonesians suffer from chronic dehydration.

What are the consequences of dehydration?

As is known, water is an essential component of the body. 60% of the body is composed of water. In addition, 75% of muscles and 85% of the human brain consist of water. Not surprisingly, lack of fluids can affect the body.

The following are complications that will occur in the organ system when dehydrated:

1. Bladder and kidneys

Although the results of the study are very varied, but most experts agree that lack of fluids can increase the risk of urinary tract infections, especially recurrent UTIs and consuming enough fluids can have a positive effect on urinary tract infections. In addition, various studies also concluded that dehydration is associated with the emergence of various diseases such as kidney stones and chronic kidney failure.

2. Digestion

Fluid deficiency is related to constipation or constipation. Therefore, it is recommended that you drink lots of mineral water and consume foods that are a source of fiber to avoid constipation. Adequate body fluids can protect you from the risk of gallstones by emptying the gallbladder. Consumption of lots of water is also associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer, especially in the distal part, the end of the intestine.

3. Blood circulation

Dehydration is also associated with an increase in blood plasma viscosity. This condition can increase the risk of the appearance of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism, coronary heart disease and orthostatic hypotension (decreased blood pressure by changing position from sitting or sleeping to standing).

4. Nerves

Fluid deficiency can cause delirium or loss of focus so there is a decrease in consciousness. Increased fluid consumption is also associated with reduced intensity in migraines.

5. Metabolic

Fluid consumption can be protective against the state of hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar levels) which is often associated with diabetes. In addition, dehydration is associated with poor clinical outcomes in diabetic patients with ketoacidosis. A number of studies (although the results are still inconsistent) link sufficient fluid consumption with the process of losing weight so that it is proven that drinking lots of water can help to prevent obesity. Dehydration can also have an impact on the respiratory tract so asthma patients are usually advised to breathe in moist air.

6. Pregnancy

During pregnancy. Dehydration can cause a lack of amniotic fluid, causing oligohydramnios or a decrease in the amount of amniotic fluid. Fulfillment of the amount of fluid is also highly recommended for mothers who are breastfeeding so that the breastfeeding process can run smoothly.

So that you are more alert and avoid various complications due to chronic dehydration, it is very important for you to recognize the signs of dehydration. Excessive thirst, odor and dark urine, dry skin and dizziness can be a sign that you are dehydrated.

However, if there are no signs of dehydration, you should get used to drinking enough water. Because, meeting fluid needs every day is one way to maintain health.
